Arlington Pool House

07/16/19

LOCATION / Houston
TYPE / New Home
SIZE / 360SF
STATUS / Completed 2018
ROLE / Architect of Record, Builder

Built in the Houston Heights, this 360sf conditioned pool house with its 840sf exterior covered deck provides additional living quarters and a bathroom to accompany a new pool situated on the neighboring lot to the north of an existing residence.
The dog-trot inspired plan works well on the 50’ x 125’ lot. The front of the 12’ x 42’ house aligns with the neighborhood’s historic bungalows, nearly occupying the full width of the lot to conceal the back yard from street. The structure is raised on piers with 8’ covered porches at the front and back that are connected by a central outdoor breezeway and fireplace. The linear pool in the back yard allows for ample green space to the north and a new sun deck connecting to the existing home at the south.

Lexington House

04/24/18

LOCATION / Houston
TYPE / New Home
SIZE / 4,140SF
STATUS / Completed 2018
ROLE / Architect of Record

The owner replaced his 1920’s 1-story bungalow with a 4,140 sf, two-story home. The property, located in Houston’s Upper Kirby, sits adjacent to highway I-59 to its south.
The layout of the home, U-shaped, was informed by the owner’s desire to have a private outdoor space that was not impacted from both Lexington Street and the constant traffic noise along I-59. Interior living spaces are open and filled with natural daylight. The central courtyard is the home’s main focus with activity from the kitchen, media room, garage, master suite and family room all spilling into its space.

1501 Laird

01/16/18

LOCATION / Houston
TYPE / New Home/Studio
SIZE / 504SF
STATUS / Completed 2017
ROLE / Architect of Record, General Contractor

The zFab 504 prototype was site-built in the Houston Heights, a neighborhood known for its bungalow-lined streets. The narrow rectilinear plan proved to be an ideal solution for the tight constraints of the 25’ x 100’ corner lot. The 12’ x 42’ home is raised on piers with an 8’ front deck and 4’ back deck. A driveway sits at the back of the property while a garden along the side provides a buffer from the constant passing of cars. Built as a residence with an open concept plan the home was converted into a BZD’s studio.

Linkwood House

04/18/17

LOCATION / Houston
TYPE / New Home
SIZE / 3,500SF
STATUS / Completed 2016
ROLE / Architect of Record, General Contractor

The owners replaced their mid-century ranch house in the postwar subdivision of Linkwood with this new two-story 3,500 sf house. Because the property is located in one of Houston’s major 100-year flood plains along Brays Bayou, the new house is elevated 4 feet above grade to protect from potential floods. The L-shaped layout of the home was informed by the owners’ desire to maintain shade provided by several mature trees. The plan connects the interior to the landscape through the placement of large glass windows that allow passing views from the front of the house through to the expansive backyard. The first level’s covered porches further connect the interior living spaces with the outdoors. A screened porch at the upper level provides an additional family room amongst the trees, blurring the line between interior and exterior.

4525 Washington

07/02/15

LOCATION / Houston – Washington Corridor
TYPE / Retail Shell
SIZE / 4,995 SF
STATUS / Completed 2015
ROLE / Architect of Record
OWNER / ORR Commercial
The 4,995sf one-story retail shell is located in one of Houston’s main urban corridors. The building is designed to interrupt Houston’s speed: to create conversation with the pedestrian and slow the ongoing traffic. The north (front) side’s rhythmic large glass panels actively engage the passerby with a rigor of repetition that connects the building to sidewalk and street. The roof overhang with exposed APBs and cedar soffit slip into the interior of the shell and gesture an offering of cover and protection.

LOCATION / Houston
TYPE / Commercial Development
SIZE / Campus – 6 Acres
Main Bldg. – 4,550 SF
Bldg 1 – 1,320 SF
Bldg 2 – 1,320 SF

STATUS / Conceptual
ROLE / Architect of Record
The 6-acre site, located just off of Houston’s Highway 290, is planned for a Landscape Nursery. The site establishes a central loop that organizes plants and materials for ease of delivery and pick up. Three, 2-story buildings, that total 7,200sf, are located along the south of the property to maximize visual control. The concept is revealed through simplicity and clarity of assembly of parts, a process of addition. The ease of construction allows for a model for future nurseries. Built for efficiency and practicality, the three buildings incorporate a steel frame wrapped with corrugated corten skin and glass.
